USOMI Genomics is our genetics and biotechnology department, which provides services that ensure farmers are planting the right crop varieties as well as rearing the right livestock breeds for their production systems. Livestock Genetic Services

What We Do

DNA profiling

This service allows farmers to identify the breed composition of their animals and keep a genomic profile for future reference. Based on DNA profile data, genetic purity (or admixture) can be determined.

Genetic Stock identification

This is an important service that will allow distinguishing between closely related species/strains/ecotypes.

Parentage testing

This service allows farmers to determine Sire parentage, Dam parentage. At present we offer the verification of parentage and identity in horses, cattle, pigs, sheep, goats and dogs. Parentage tests allow the owner to identify:

  • The parents of each offspring.
  • whether the offspring is due to natural or assisted mating.
  • The sires that produce the largest number of offspring.
  • The sires with the best/worst performing offspring.

Testing for disease loci

We offer analyses for Multiple Genetic Abnormalities and Conditions in cattle, including Neuropathic Hydrocephalus (NH) and Arthrogryposis Multiplex (AM), Coat Color Dilution (DL), Idiopathic Epilepsy (IE), Osteopetrosis (OS), Pulmonary Hypoplasia Anasarca (PHA) and Tibial Hemimelia (TH). Other tests include Kappa-casein, Freemartinism, and Polled cattle.
